Figure out what to do with "Status Updates"

We recently changed what we were calling "status update" to be called "note", targetting primarily microblogging apps like Twitter.
However, we need to figure out how (and whether) this differs from the concept of a Status Update as support by Facebook, Plaxo and MySpace.
It's also been suggested that we allow for IM-like statuses such as "Fred is available" and "Fred is busy".
